I recently found out that January is #mentoringmonth. Simply search that hashtag in Twitter and you will see the significant impact that mentoring has. This quickly got me thinking about all of the wonderful opportunities available locally to give back as a mentor or to receive mentorship, and the number of great partners we work with at TechAlliance, an organization that was built on the support of our community. Therefore, what better opportunity to take a moment and reflect upon some of the wonderful partners we work with and the many programs we’re currently supporting.
Supporting budding entrepreneurs – TechAlliance, the Small Business Centre, Propel Entrepreneurship at Western, and Leap Junction at Fanshawe – just to name a few, are all more than willing to help connect you with one or several individuals that will help support the growth of your new venture.
Supporting newcomers – TechAlliance is a community partner for the Mentorship for Immigrant Employment program facilitated by LMIEC. This program brings together internationally trained individuals with local mentors in their field to gain a better understanding of the regional job market; establish valuable networking contacts; and learn more about sector-specific language and professional practice in Canada. Most recently, they welcomed TechAlliance member, Trudell Medical International to their roster of corporate champions!
Supporting youth – This is how my role at TechAlliance originated (nearly a decade ago!), finding mentors for budding young scientists competing in Sanofi Biogenius Canada. I am still passionate towards helping youth pursue their passions and TechAlliance still plays a role in supporting youth innovation through their work with the Thames Valley Science & Engineering Fair who also encourage their participants to seek mentorship from the local STEM community (and are currently accepting registrations!)
In such a giving community, I’ve named only a handful of opportunities available but let’s take the time to celebrate and appreciate the power of mentorship.
