A founding partner of Rutherford McKay Associates, since 2000, John McKay has provided public relations, marketing, strategic communications, media relations and training services to the public, private and non-profit sectors.
John is a strategist, issue manager and communications specialist. He has an analytical mindset coupled with creativity and the ability to see issues from different perspectives. He is able to develop novel approaches while keeping the focus on producing practical and measurable outcomes.
In London, he has worked with Canadian Centre for Product Validation (CCPV) and Fanshawe College providing corporate communications services. He developed a multi-year marketing campaign for the SaskPower Global Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Consortium, a worldwide group of private sector energy companies, power utilities and governments. He has designed and implemented numerous communications and media relations campaigns ranging from the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, to the presence of unexploded military ordnance in Canadian communities, to civil unrest associated with the G-8 and G-20 meetings.
He has worked with senior Canadian and American military personnel at NORAD headquarters in Colorado Springs and with Canadian Embassy personnel in Washington D.C. on media relations and communications issues, helping with the development of messages, news media and public/community engagement. He has extensive experience working with the non-profit sector on issues of homelessness, housing and mental health.
He is a respected trainer, speaker and presenter. He has delivered hundreds of training courses, facilitated meetings and events, and made speeches and presentations before large crowds and small groups. From speaking before primary and secondary school students in British Columbia, to executive level speeches and presentations in Toronto and Ottawa, to training sessions and seminars in all parts of the country including the far north, John has had many successes. Over three decades he has also made a lot of mistakes – probably all of the common ones and a few he invented himself. These were moments of learning that have helped him find a path to a success for his clients.
You may not know…
RMA is different than other communications, marketing and public relations companies. Unlike most of our competitors, we don’t believe in spin or misleading marketing.
RMA is a trust builder.
We know that people will support you if they trust you. Knowledge about your product, engineering and tech specs is a minor contributor to their decision to support you through hiring you, buying your product, funding, being a committed employee, etc.
The determining factor is trust.
We believe you build trust through clear, authentic communication. We help our clients know what breeds trust and what erodes it. Then we help them to do the former and avoid the latter.
In short, we don’t do old school PR. That’s the kind of thing that doesn’t work in today’s world of instant communication. It’s what drives all of us nuts. So why do it?
Further, RMA is the only company that we’re aware of that offers communications and media relations training programs through our innovative onDemand platform that allows for interaction with experts in real time.
