Name: Aaron Finkenzeller
Title: VP, Technology
Company: CARFAX Canada
As one of the leading sources of automotive information, CARFAX Canada empowers millions of Canadians with insights to make better decisions about vehicles. Formerly known as CARPROOF, we started right here in London over 18 years ago, and we’re still proudly headquartered here today. What we’re passionate about is harnessing data to help Canadians buy and sell used cars effectively.
What is your role and what is your favorite part of your job?
As the VP, Technology at CARFAX Canada I really enjoy helping the smart, passionate people we have here. I aim to do that through providing opportunities for growth, fostering a culture of innovation, celebrating wins… and the occasional caffeinated beverage doesn’t hurt either.
If you could have coffee with any business leader or industry expert, who would you choose, and why?
It would have to be Seth Godin. I’ve heard him speak a few times and I have so many things I’d love to discuss with him. I admire his approach to people, technology and value, and how he articulates the relationships between them so clearly.
What is the #1 business book/blog/website you would recommend?
There are so many great books out there, but lately we’ve been reading Radical Candor by Kim Scott as part of our company-wide book club, and it will change how you lead. I’m also a big fan of podcasts as the content gets changed every episode, so if you have time to listen to only one I’d suggest The Tim Ferris Show, (he’s the guy best known for writing The 4-Hour Workweek).
Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
As a Canadian company started in London, I’m excited by our growth and innovation in the automotive space. It’s an exciting industry with a lot of change going on right now – I see that as endless opportunity to innovate.
What excites you most about the local tech community?
We have an emerging tech community here – there’s a ton of talent and opportunity, but we’re not really on the Canadian radar yet. The next couple years are going to shape the tech industry here as things start to accelerate. London has all the right ingredients and it’s close to achieving critical mass!
What causes or community activities is your company involved in?
Charities we have supported include Make-a-Wish Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Big Bike, underprivileged local groups (children, seniors, minorities) and we have an employee charity of choice program. We are always looking for places to make a difference.
