What is your role and what is your favorite part of your job?
As the VP of the development, support, and SQA departments I would say that the part of my job that I love the most is solving real-world technology problems. I derive great personal satisfaction from knowing that we made someone’s life easier by making a complex problem go away.
If you could have coffee with any business leader or industry expert, who would you choose, and why?
Over the years I’ve had the chance to meet many great leaders and when given a moment I always take the time to probe their brains where possible. A common question I often ask is with regards to their career path and how they got to where they are today. I find that great leaders share a common trait and that is passion for what they do. These leaders have taken that passion and have channelled it into making the world around them better (faster…stronger).
What is the #1 business book/blog/website you would recommend?
That’s a difficult question as there are many sites I visit on a daily basis (technology to business). As far as recommended reading I would go with a few suggestions that make us all better leaders, managers, developers etc. and that would be “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. Another great read is “The Responsibility Virus” by Roger Martin.
Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
Our growth…pure and simple. Technology is changing faster than ever before. There are new and wonderful frameworks, languages, delivery methodologies, etc. and our customers are entering a new phase of rapid development/deployment due to the increasingly complex and competitive landscape. In summary, rapid change is upon us and the future is very exciting as a technologist but also from a pure business standpoint.
What excites you most about the local tech community?
The sheer number of techno-geeks we have in our area is overwhelming!!! As a graduate of both Fanshawe and UWO (B.Sc) I can’t be more proud of our local technology community. Some of the best and brightest engineers are from London and our enthusiasm and capabilities are becoming world-renowned!!!
What causes or community activities is your company involved in?
We proudly sponsor many hack events, job fairs, breakfasts, etc. and are always looking for ways to get our message out to our local technical resources. Our company has many offices around the globe and we are continuing to grow our software business. This of course means more jobs and with ever-increasing role flexibility.
