Title:Director of Security, Risk + Compliance
Company: Info-Tech Research Group
We are an IT research firm – we offer products and services to help any company with an IT department from developing an IT strategy to running projects more effectively to incident response and more. There are four practices that help us address that broad range of research – applications; infrastructure and operations; security, risk and compliance; and CIO and leadership. We also have an HR research division called McLean & Co. that focuses on research around employee engagement, management techniques and the human side of business.
What is your role and what is your favorite part of your job?
I am a director and research lead for the security, risk and compliance practice. Much of my day-to-day involves project and people management and the operations of the practice, as well as the development and maintenance of new products. My favourite part of the job is the people – seeing them come up with new ideas, and their drive to do good work encourages me. Plus they also make me laugh a lot!
If you could have a coffee with any business leader or industry expert who would you choose and why?
I recently tuned into an interview with Jeff Weiner, CEO of Linkedin. His approach to leadership with a focus on compassion and mindfulness would be great to talk with him more about. I don’t believe leaders need to be void of emotion or empathy. Plus, he’s good friends with Oprah, so maybe he could facilitate an introduction!
What is the number one business book or blog you would recommend?
- Simon Sinek’s Start with Why is essential – know yourself, know your why and your team’s why, and help them understand it seems common sense but so rarely practiced.
- Jocko Willink’s and Leif Babin’s Extreme Ownership – Navy Seals run tight teams, and believe in accountability, communication, integrity and this book not only gets into details of their dangerous missions, it also demonstrate how these military leaders brought these values to businesses to improve operations and effectiveness.
Looking at your companies future what are you most enthusiastic about?
We have a lot more events coming up – in Vegas, Florida, and more! So this is a great way for us to engage with clients in a new way.
What excites you most about the local tech community?
How booming it is! There are a lot of innovative ideas that address convenience, entertainment and social issues like mental health, and the entrepreneurial spirit is really felt here in London.
What causes or community activities is your company involved in?
This year’s charity is the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario – supporting childhood cancer care.
