1. What is your role and what is your favorite part of your job?
I am an Account Manager for Itec Group, so I find companies that need help with their hiring needs. With competition in the IT industry becoming fierce, the need for companies to stand out from their competitors is that much greater – we can help with that. The best part of my job is the interaction I have with companies and individuals in the tech sector. The more I learn about the tech sector in London, the more I am impressed. It’s growing at a rapid pace and is incredibly collaborative – even amongst competitors.
2. If you could have coffee with any business leader or industry expert, who would you choose, and why?
Tough choice….there’s so many that come to mind. When thinking about this, a quote I love came to mind – “The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were”. John F. Kennedy. From that quote, Elon Musk comes to mind. He’s someone who sees beyond the obvious limitations everyone else sees. A lot of his ideas were initially met with a lot of skepticism and disbelief such as one day inhabiting Mars, but I’m pretty certain he’ll find a way to accomplish it or at least get us on the right path. He’s a brilliant person who dreams big and then finds a way around or through any obstacles in his path.
3. What is the #1 business book/blog/website you would recommend?
Another tough choice. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie is one of my favorite books. Written in 1936, this book is still very relevant today and is a must read for everyone. One YouTube channel I’m hooked on right now is FightMediocrity. He summarizes popular books with easy to understand animated videos. How to Win Friends and Influence People is one of several Dale Carnegie books he has animated. Each video is 5-10 minutes long, so it’s a great way to give yourself a quick boost during the day.
4. Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
I’m excited about how we’re approaching the future. We’re expecting to maintain our fast growth, but we’re always conscious of maintaining the quality of our service and the quality of our relationships with our clients. We’re still a fairly small firm, so the sky is the limit and the future looks bright!
5. What excites you most about the local tech community?
The growth in London and Kitchener-Waterloo is really picking up pace and the help that the tech sector is offering start-ups is phenomenal. There is so much collaboration happening which accelerates growth even more. It’s an exciting time for tech companies and I love watching companies grow and the buzz they are creating for Southwestern Ontario.
6. What causes or community activities is your company involved in?
Giving back to the community is important to us. As a group, Itec is involved in several organizations in our community. We donate blood as a team (always fun to see who will pass out), we participate in the Big Bike for Heart and Stroke, and we support fantastic organizations such as the McMaster Hospital for Sick Children, Ronald McDonald House, and Adopt a Family. Individually, there are numerous organizations we support. I’ve been a Big Brother (Big Brothers Big Sisters) for 9 years and have found that to be one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my life – there’s always a need, so if you’re interested, please find out more. I also support the Canadian Cancer Society (I’m currently a member of the Relay for Life Committee). My little brother Eddie is a cancer survivor, so this charity is very important to me.
