1) What is your mobile device of choice, and why?
I’m a Blackberry user and have been for about 10 years. I recently upgraded to the Blackberry Q10 and really like it. I’m often providing support to Knighthunter.com while I’m on the go, and that sometimes means typing an email response of a paragraph or two. I simply can’t do that efficiently using a virtual keyboard.
2) Who do you look to for inspiration, in business or your personal life?
I’m always in awe of the great entrepreneurial spirit and successes in London. Voices.com, Startech.com and Ek3 Technologies are just a few examples of companies that have been started by local entrepreneurs and have grown to have an international impact. Best of all they have accomplished this largely with talented London employees. We are fortunate to have great local successes, and it inspires me to improve both our products and processes.
3) What is the #1 business book you would recommend?
I do most of my reading online, so I don’t read books as often as I’d like. I did like the Zappos customer service story as told in “Delivering Happiness”. It may be cliché, but I strongly agree that customer service is the backbone of every business. There are many satisfying things about being self-employed, but by far the best “perk” is a compliment from a happy customer.
4) What keeps you up at night?
As a web-based business, the constant change and evolution of technology is a source of both stress and opportunity. It can be challenging keeping up with browser compatibility issues, security threats and the changes that come with mobile computing. Fortunately I have a great team of professionals – from web design and development to server maintenance that help me stay on top of these issues. I could not offer the services I do without their help and advice.
5) Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
The future success of Knighthunter.com is closely connected to the success of London’s economy in general. We have been through some very tough times in recent years, but I am very enthusiastic about the future. When I launched Knighthunter in 2000 it was during a period of economic uncertainty. We grew out of that as London did, and I feel that our company can continue to evolve with the local economy. There are many public and private efforts that are underway that will help shape a successful future for London. Many of these efforts will take time to produce results, but as they do, London will become stronger than ever. My goal is to provide great tools to bring talented Londoners and great local companies together, and in turn, grow with the city.
6) What causes/community involvement/corporate social responsibility efforts are your company involved in?
As a small local company we work hard to earn the goodwill of our employer and candidate clients. We are happy to have the opportunity to return that goodwill in a variety of ways. We donated over $4,500 in cash and services to London-area charitable organizations last year, and we are on track for an even larger contribution this year.
Personally I am proud to be involved with the Venture London Business Competition, Bridges to Better Business and through presentations to local job search support groups and agencies.
