Name: David Brebner
Title: Managing Partner
Company: Magnus Associates
Magnus Associates is a strategic management consulting firm. We specialize in helping companies build their corporate foundation to support growth from innovation to commercialization. Said another way, we support transitioning companies from seed to series A and established companies with large-scale initiatives focused on innovation and commercialization. In addition, our team of experts also provides specific services in strategic planning, human resources, operations, sales, accounting, finance, funding (public and private) and transaction support (mergers, acquisitions, shareholder transactions, etc).
What is your role and what is your favorite part of your job?
I’m a co-managing partner and key member of the team as it relates to accounting, governance, operations, structures, funding and transactions. Based on my role (managing the business and supporting our clients), I have two favourite parts: we have experts in their fields who work at Magnus. This makes it extremely interesting on a daily basis to have conversations with my colleagues regarding the topics of the day. And as it relates to servicing our clients, my favourite part is closing deals, whether that be raises or acquisitions, achieving a closed deal takes persistence, patience, a strong team and often a little creativity.
If you could have coffee with any business leader or industry expert, who would you choose, and why?
We have many opportunities to interact with business leaders who we trust and respect, but we haven’t had as much exposure in the US. I would love to have a conversation with Jack Dorsey (CEO Twitter), Chris Sacca (Lowercase Capital) or pretty much anyone senior at Sequoia Capital (investments in Stripe, Kayak, Google, Yahoo, Paypal, Evernote, Airbnb, Square, Houzz, Dropbox, Tumblr, etc).
What is the #1 business book/blog/website you would recommend?
Our company is enjoying thought leadership on marketplaces and platforms. The books we have seen that are most relevant are Matchmakers and Platform Scale.
Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
We have been working diligently with our clients and our own investments for the past few years, and there are many opportunities that seem to now have surfaced all at once. As we work through each opportunity, our clients and our investments will be very happy. Ultimately, this will lead to us having the opportunity to have a bigger team and to have a larger reach across North America.
What excites you most about the local tech community?
That there is finally a tech community. We have invested in and serviced clients in the tech community and are excited to see what has and is transpiring in the environment. Companies that have become successful are supporting those companies trying to be successful which is creating the necessary vibrancy to evolve beyond standalone tech companies trying to make a go at it by themselves.
What causes or community activities is your company involved in?
Our company is very supportive of others in making the city better. We support organizations that are supporting our social environment (Innovations Works) or the space we live in (The London Plan and My Dundas). In addition, we have individuals who are heavily involved with the medical sector and arts and culture.
