Name: Camille Ross
Title: Media Coach & Strategist
Company: Media Coach Cam
I am a television broadcaster by trade. After spending a decade as a news reporter and anchor for CTV News and Global News – I now help professionals prepare for media interviews. There is an art to answering questions effectively. The media can be an amazing tool for business owners to promote their product, brand or cause. Even if the news is bad, crisis communications training can save a company’s reputation. I’ve worked with business professionals, physicians, entrepreneurs, community associations, colleges, university’s and much more.
What is your role and what is your favourite part of your job?
My role is to prepare clients for any situation that comes their way. If a journalist were to come knocking at your door tomorrow – would you be ready? I prepare clients with punchy sound bites and solid key messages that are media friendly. My favourite part of the job is seeing clients ace their interviews and truly understand how to speak to the media. Most clients quickly catch on to the formula. The skills learned in one or two sessions serve them throughout their careers.
If you could have coffee with any business leader or industry expert, who would you choose, and why?
I’m a lucky girl. I’ve already had the opportunity to chat with an industry expert. I once had the pleasure of interviewing Larry King – the king of communications. I learned so much from him about the art of media interviews. I always pass on this advice to my clients: Listen to your interviewer instead of focusing on the next thing you want to say. It’s just a conversation, not an interrogation. Larry King brings out the best in his guests because he is genuinely interested.
What is the #1 business book/blog/website you would recommend?
I would recommend a book called “Pitch Perfect: How to Say It Right the First Time, Every Time” by Bill McGowan.
Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
I am most enthusiastic about a new project we’re working on. My vision is to make high quality media training and spokesperson training available to anyone and everyone.
What excites you most about the local tech community?
I am most excited by the pace at which this community moves. Moving forward shows a true desire to learn and produce better products for our consumers. This is a great time to be a business person and a consumer.
What causes or community activities is your company involved in?
Media Coach Cam offers pro bono spokesperson training to select community charities and associations who cannot otherwise afford it.
