Name: Tarek Moharram
Title: Founder & President
Company: Moharram Ventures
Moharram Ventures is a project management and business consulting firm. While some might view this description as a little vague, the breadth of this statement was intentional. I made a conscious decision to avoid narrowly defining our operations and thereby constraining our ability to consider new opportunities. As a result, in the fairly short time since Moharram Ventures became incorporated, we have already filed for a patent on a novel type of biodegradable polymer, released an innovative legal services bidding platform called contingentSee, and helped a few organizations establish the groundwork for future success. I have no doubt that we will continue to take on new projects as our team grows in terms of both capacity and diversity.
What is your role and what is your favorite part of your job?
My first job in building Moharram Ventures was to create a healthy organizational culture. I carefully drafted our mission, vision, values, and mantra to reflect the kind of organization that I would want to work for (had I not founded it myself). Next, I set a few short- and medium-term strategic priorities – the most critical of which was selecting and developing a team of outstanding Contributors. I did my best to lead the first team of Contributors by example in order to clearly communicate my expectations and help set the tone that would govern our future together.
Now that the organization’s foundation has been established, I am responsible for leading Moharram Ventures as it continues to scale – meaning that I maintain a continued focus on identifying new talent to join our teams of Contributors, relentlessly reinforce our culture, and manage our various projects.
I honestly love what I am doing. Every single day I am presented with the chance to tinker with ideas, work with tremendous people, and participate in shaping the future on my own terms.
If you could have coffee with any business leader or industry expert, who would you choose, and why?
I am attracted to dynamic leaders and thought pioneers, so I would welcome the opportunity to chat with Howard Hughes. He took risks in his attempts to innovate, he had the tenacity to push forward in spite of failure, and he has had a lasting impact upon more than one industry – all of which I greatly admire. As for those who are still with the living, there are certainly a number of great people from which to choose. While Elon Musk, Sir Richard Branson, Larry Page, or Jeff Bezos would each undoubtedly bring a lot to the table, I am in some ways more interested in connecting with the next generation of leaders and creators. Right now, thinkers in cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and other emerging fields are establishing themselves as our new class of visionaries – those are the folks that most pique my interest.
What is the #1 business book/blog/website you would recommend?
I highly recommend both The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation by Jon Gertner (for non-fiction lovers) and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (for those more interested in fictional works). Each is replete with gems of wisdom that I will treasure forever.
Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
Our people – no question. Success at Moharram Ventures is almost entirely dependent upon our collective capacity to anticipate, create, and evolve. While I am one of our Contributors and while I do take pride in leading the organization, I cannot do it alone. I am excited about the things we will achieve together based upon the combination of our respective sets of skill, knowledge, and experience.
What excites you most about the local tech community?
The passion of the existing (and emerging) industry leaders in our community, the people/support structures that exist to facilitate our success, and the enormous opportunity we have to prosper by attracting more bright minds to our city.
What causes or community activities is your company involved in?
Through a partnership with the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre, we were able to create the 1st Annual Dream, then Do™ Venture Competition. This program encourages recent CCLC newcomer clients to pitch their best idea for starting a business in London. Applications are reviewed by a committee and the winning applicant is granted $1,000 dollars (donated annually by Moharram Ventures). It’s an effective way to help foster new investment in our community and a great opportunity for the winning applicant to promote his/her proposed business.
