The monthly Spotlight is an opportunity to learn more about a leader, innovator or entrepreneur in the tech community. This month, we spotlight Adam Malamis of Simalam.
What is your mobile device of choice, and why?
I love my iPad. Great way to digest information and keep connected.
Who do you look to for inspiration, in business or your personal life?
From a marketing perspective, Seth Godin. There aren’t many who have demonstrated his level of prescience and understanding of how people relate to and perceive companies and their products. Businesswise, there’s no one particular person. I’ve been fortunate to meet a lot of great people who do what they love and make money while doing it. I never take that for granted.
What is the #1 business book you would recommend?
Rework by Jason Fried. It’s a very blunt approach to entrepreneurship and I love Fried’s tongue-in-cheek style.
What keeps you up at night?
Same stresses and worries that most business owners think about. Reading industry-related blogs/books and brainstorming ideas to help our clients grow. Mobile tech and all the potential we have as a market that is on the cusp of fully embracing the medium gets me giddy. Also, my neighbour’s dog.
Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
Growth – of our company and our team dynamic. The continued opportunity to work with amazing clients, be challenged, and to create the remarkable. That doesn’t get old.
What causes/community involvement/corporate social responsibility efforts are your company involved in?
This is my second year as a mentor to a graphic design student at Fanshawe, which has been a great experience. I’ve been working with Emerging Leaders in various capacities over the last 2 years as well. As someone who came to the city knowing virtually no one and decided to stay after finishing my degree, I really appreciate what they’re doing.
