What is your role and what is your favorite part of your job?
As Vice President and General Manager of our Railway division, I’m fortunate enough to travel the globe and support the world’s leading railroads, whether that’s in the Americas, Europe, Africa or Australasia. The most incredible part of my job, is knowing we make a positive impact on the world (not quite world peace, but we’re working on that too). We leverage and innovate around emerging technologies and apply them to real-world situations. At the end of the day, our solutions allow our customers to operate more efficiently and we deliver significant environmental savings that make our world a better place. When you can deliver for your customers, your employees and the environment, it’s incredibly rewarding.
If you could have coffee with any business leader or industry expert, who would you choose, and why?
I’d really enjoy sitting down and having a coffee with Jerry Seinfeld, preferably in a car (what a great idea for a TV show). Why Seinfeld and not a business leader? — When you can laugh at everyday situations and the nuances that make people so diverse and interesting, I think it allows you to stay balanced, not take yourself seriously and appreciate how important relationships are in business… and I need a good laugh from time to time.
What is the #1 business book/blog/website you would recommend?
Does Seinfeld write books (just kidding)? My philosophy is to pick up a book, any book, preferably in print as I spend too much time already in front of a screen. If you commit to the concept of lifelong learning then I can recommend anything; whether it’s to expose yourself to something new, for self-development or simply to learn a new skill. I would recommend reading about EQ (Emotional Intelligence). It’s such a critical component to identifying high performing individuals that often doesn’t get enough consideration by leaders.
Looking at your company’s future, what are you most enthusiastic about?
ZTR is an incredible example of a mid-sized Canadian technology company that has solidified itself on the world stage. We have had significant, sustainable growth for many years and that’s a testament to our leadership, employees and our innovative solutions. We continue to add additional software, hardware and service solutions to our portfolio and develop new markets around the world. With a strong commitment to the London community, a strategic focus on growth and in serving our global customers, it’s hard not to be enthusiastic.
What excites you most about the local tech community?
London has a thriving technology community. For the size of our city, there is a highly disproportionate number of successful and sometimes, relatively unknown, technology companies. I’m proud to be part of a community that is extremely entrepreneurial and one that continues to produce successful, niche technology leaders that help put London on the map.
What causes or community activities is your company involved in?
ZTR advocates giving back and participation within the community. The company is involved with a number of local charities and non-profit organizations including:
- Neighbourhood Resource Association of Westminster Park Breakfast Club (serving breakfast to school kids)
- United Way (through the GEN-NEXT program)
- CP Holiday Train
- London Food Bank
- Jesse’s Journey
- Women’s Community House
- Salvation Army Kettle Campaign
- Ride for Dad in support of the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation
- Big Bike Ride in support of the Heart & Stroke Foundation
- Canadian Breast Cancer Society
- London Chamber of Commerce
- London Health Sciences Centre Foundation
- Make a Wish Foundation
ZTR has several committees that encourage staff to enjoy company-led social events, get involved with charitable organizations through various creative activities, and attend educational and interactive business and community events in London and the area. On top of that, the company gives each employee four paid work hours to volunteer with the charity of their choice. ZTR feels finding a balance between work life and family life is crucial to employee satisfaction and work productivity.
